Terraform Associate 004 Exam: Format, Cost and Study Plan

Engineer reviewing Terraform configuration files on a laptop while preparing for the Terraform Associate 004 exam

The Terraform Associate 004 exam is the only Associate-level Terraform certification available since HashiCorp retired the 003 version on January 8, 2026. It is a 1-hour, multiple-choice, online-proctored exam that costs $70.50 USD plus applicable taxes and earns a credential valid for 2 years. If you already studied with 003 materials, most of that work still transfers; this guide shows exactly what to add, how registration works on the new platform, and how many hours to budget based on where you start.

Format, Cost and Logistics

The fact sheet below comes from HashiCorp’s official certification page, which lists the current exam as testing Terraform 1.12.

The price makes this one of the cheapest credible infrastructure certifications on the market, but the retake economics differ from hands-on exams you may know. The PNPT bundles a free retake into its 5-day format (see our PNPT guide), while HashiCorp charges the full fee again for every attempt. Community reporting on the current exam indicates one retake is allowed after 24 hours, with subsequent attempts requiring 14-day waits (CertLabPro). HashiCorp does not publish a passing score; candidates commonly estimate it around 70 percent, so treat that figure as anecdotal rather than official.

Eight Domains and New Objectives

The 004 exam is organized into eight objective groups: infrastructure as code concepts, Terraform fundamentals, the core workflow (init, validate, plan, apply, destroy, fmt), configuration authoring, modules, state management, maintaining infrastructure, and HCP Terraform. HashiCorp’s exam update summary highlights four new topics compared with the 003: explicit dependencies with lifecycle rules (objective 4f), validation with custom conditions (4g), ephemeral values and write-only arguments (4h), and HCP Terraform workspaces and projects (8c).

What do these look like in practice? The dependencies objective means you must distinguish implicit graph edges created by resource references from explicit depends_on declarations, and know how create_before_destroy changes replacement ordering. Custom conditions means writing validation blocks inside variable declarations and predicting how failures surface during plan. Ephemeral values and write-only arguments target secrets handling: keeping sensitive values out of state files and knowing when a provider supports arguments that are never persisted. The HCP Terraform objective expects you to organize work into projects and workspaces and to reason about collaboration and governance features such as policy enforcement. KodeKloud’s transition notes estimate that roughly 70 percent of 003 content carries over directly, so candidates with recent 003 preparation should concentrate their remaining hours on these additions (KodeKloud notes).

How to Register and Schedule

Registration changed with this version. According to HashiCorp’s certification support desk, you schedule and purchase the exam through the Certiverse platform, reached from the HashiCorp Cloud Engineer Certification Exam Portal (HashiCorp support article). Delivery moved from PSI to Certiverse when the new exam launched, so any check-in habits you memorized for PSI proctoring no longer apply.

Follow this sequence to avoid surprises:

  1. Create or sign in to your account on the HashiCorp certification portal with the email you want on your badge.
  2. Open the left-side menu, choose Schedule/Take Exam, then Exam Platform, and click through to Certiverse.
  3. Pick a date and time, pay the fee plus local taxes, and confirm the appointment email.
  4. Before exam day, test your webcam, microphone, and connection on the same machine and network you will use; Certiverse runs in the browser rather than a downloaded secure browser.
  5. Clear your desk and unplug second monitors; the proctor will scan your ID, face, and room.

Rescheduling through Certiverse is generally permitted up to 24 hours before the appointment, which is tighter than it sounds when you are booking a same-week slot. If you must move an exam inside that window, expect to forfeit the fee.

Study Plan by Experience

Honest hours estimates from candidates who have sat the 004:

Starting pointStudy timeCalendar
Daily Terraform user15-25 hours2-3 weeks
Occasional user40-60 hours5-6 weeks
New to Terraform80-120 hours8-10 weeks

Experienced users should spend their hours on the new-content documentation (Stacks vocabulary, run tasks, drift detection, expanded Sentinel policy work) plus 200-300 timed practice questions to build pattern recognition, since the question style is HashiCorp-specific. Newcomers should read the official Terraform documentation end to end and build one real multi-environment project before booking; book-learning Terraform without using it produces knowledge that fades within weeks. In every case, work through the official objectives list and mark each sub-objective you can demonstrate hands-on.

If You Hold the 003

Your existing credential is unaffected: it remains valid until its original expiration date. To renew, HashiCorp gives 003 holders two paths. You can pass the Terraform Authoring and Operations Advanced exam, which extends your current credentials and adds an advanced badge, or you can pass the 004 Associate exam starting 6 months before your expiration date, which issues a new, separate credential whose date does not extend the original. That renewal logic differs from credential clocks like the CISSP endorsement window (explained here), where passing starts a separate process with its own deadline. If your 003 already expired, the only option is passing the current Associate exam at any time.
